Australia's consumer sentiment improved during the week ended April 9, after weakening in the previous week, a weekly survey compiled by the ANZ bank and Roy Morgan Research showed Tuesday.

The consumer confidence index rose by 3.3 percent to 114.8 from 111.1 in the preceding week.

Households' views towards their current finances climbed by 5.2 percent to 107.0, which was the highest score since February. Similarly, their views about future finances gained by 1.4 percent to 123.9.

Inflation expectations were largely unchanged at 4.3 percent, with the four week moving average holding steady at 4.3 percent.

"While last week's pick-up in sentiment is encouraging, we remain of the view that spending growth is likely to remain constrained in a low wage environment, consistent with the recent softness in retail sales," David Plank, ANZ's head of Australian economics, said.

Inflation data from Japan gained attention in Asia.
