Pearl Jam have postponed the North American leg of the band's 2020 tour over coronavirus concerns.

The band was scheduled to begin the tour in support of their new album Gigaton on March 18 in Toronto. The album will be released on March 27.

Pearl Jam's hometown of Seattle, Washington, is where most of the coronavirus deaths in the United States have occurred.

"We are being told that being part of large gatherings is high on the list of things to avoid as this global health crisis is now beginning to affect all of our lives," the rock band said on their website.

Pearl Jam vowed that they will always keep the safety and well-being of their supporters as top priority.

The band blamed the government for inaction in the face of the spread of the disease.

"It certainly hasn't helped that there's been no clear messages from our government regarding people's safety and our ability to go to work," Pearl Jam said.

They added, "Having no examples of our national health department's ability to get ahead of this, we have no reason to believe that it will be under control in the coming weeks ahead."
