In the latest episode of "Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums" podcast on Amazon Music, Lauryn Hill explained why she never made another studio album after her solo debut, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
"The wild thing is no one from my label has ever called me and asked how can we help you make another album, ever…ever. Did I say ever? Ever!" Hill said.
Hill said her intention behind the album was "simply to make something that made my foremothers and forefathers in music and social and political struggle know that someone received what they'd sacrificed to give us, and to let my peers know that we could walk in that truth, proudly and confidently."
The hit album, released in 1998 when Hill was just 23, sold millions of copies, and won her five Grammy awards.
Twenty-three years have passed since then, and the former Fugees singer never did another album, except for her live project MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 in 2002.
Often regarded as one of the greatest rappers of all time, as well as being a pioneer in the Neo soul genre, Hill is widely credited for breaking barriers for female rappers.
