A group of 33 nations have called on all international sport federations to suspend Russian and Belarusian national governing bodies of sports in protest against Russia's invasion of Ukraine. A joint statement issued by Sports Ministers of 33 countries also demanded that individuals closely aligned to the Russian and Belarusian governments should be removed from positions of influence on international sport federations, such as boards and organizing committees.
The ministers on Tuesday said that in cases where sports organizations permit athletes from these two allied countries to compete, it should be made clear that they are not representing the Russian or Belarusian states. The use of official Russian and Belarusian flags, emblems and anthems should be prohibited.
