U.S. Stocks Remain Notably Lower After Early Pullback

Stocks moved sharply lower early in the session on Friday and continue to see significant weakness in afternoon trading. With the pullback on the day, the major averages have more than offset the modest gains posted in the previous session.

Currently, the major averages are off their lows of the session but still firmly negative. The Nasdaq is down 229.91 points or 1.8 percent at 12,735.43, the S&P 500 is down 43.08 points or 1 percent at 4,240.66 and the narrower Dow is down 178.08 points or 0.5 percent at 33,820.96.

In the U.S., spending data, initial jobless claims and pending home sales were the highlights. Business confidence in the biggest euro area economy was in focus in Europe. Inflation data from Japan gained attention in Asia.
