Legendary Irish singer-songwriter and activist Sinead O'Connor, best known for her rendition of "Nothing Compares 2 U," has died at the age of 56.

"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinead," O'Connor's family said in a statement to several media outlets. "Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time."

O'Connor released her critically acclaimed debut album The Lion And The Cobra in 1987 and broke through in 1990 with her No. 1 hit "Nothing Compares 2 U," which was written and composed by Prince.

The outspoken singer-songwriter released 10 studio albums, with her most recent being 2014's I'm Not Bossy, I'm the Boss.

She made headlines in 1993 when she tore up a picture of Pope John Paul II during an appearance on "Saturday Night Live" as a protest against sexual abuse within the Catholic Church.
