After moving in opposite directions early in the session, the major U.S. stock indexes continue to turn in a mixed performance in afternoon trading on Wednesday. While the Dow has climbed firmly into positive territory, the tech-heavy Nasdaq has spent most of the day lingering modestly below the unchanged line.
Currently, the Dow is just off its highs of the session, up 230.58 points or 0.7 percent at 34,748.31. The S&P 500 is also up 10.01 points or 0.2 percent at 4,453.96, but the Nasdaq is down 9.75 points or 0.1 percent at 13,668.43.

The Federal Reserve policy session was in focus as it was the first to be led by the new chief Kevin Warsh. In Europe, central banks of the U.K. and Switzerland announced their rate decisions. In Asia, the Bank of Japan drew attention for its policy moves, while data out of China threw some light on the state of the economy.
