Former U.S. Jazz Ambassador and music director Quincy Jones has been honored with the inaugural Peace Through Music Award.

At the launch of the Global Music Diplomacy Initiative by the U.S. State Department, Quincy's daughter Rashida Jones received the award on his behalf from Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Recording Academy Chief Executive Officer Harvey Mason, Jr.

Presenting the award, Mason said that in future, it will be known as the Quincy Jones Peace Through Music Award.

In her acceptance speech, Jones said her father was one of the first jazz ambassadors named by the State Department to travel around the world promoting peace and understanding through music.

"Quincy believes in the global community, the far-reaching impact of connectivity in music," she added. "And we hope that this award inspires others to do the same - to remember that we're in this together and that we truly are a global community".

The Peace through Music Award, a collaboration between the State Department and the Recording Academy, recognizes and honors an American music industry professional, artist, or group that has played an invaluable role in cross-cultural exchanges and whose music work advances peace and mutual understanding globally.

Dave Grohl and Mickey Guyton were among music industry icons who attended the ceremony.
