U. K. Retail Sales Rebound Most Since Early 2021

U. K. retail sales grew at the fastest pace since early 2021 underscoring that consumer spending is set to provide boost to the economic recovery in the first quarter of 2024.

Retail sales volumes rebounded 3.4 percent in January, following a record fall of 3.3 percent in December, the Office for National Statistics said Friday.

This was the largest monthly rise since April 2021. Economists had forecast a moderate growth of 1.5 percent.

The Federal Reserve policy session was in focus as it was the first to be led by the new chief Kevin Warsh. In Europe, central banks of the U.K. and Switzerland announced their rate decisions. In Asia, the Bank of Japan drew attention for its policy moves, while data out of China threw some light on the state of the economy.
