Pericarditis refers to inflammation of pericardium, i.e. the sac surrounding the heart, leading to fluid buildup around the heart. It also makes the pericardium thicker. Symptoms of pericarditis include severe chest pain, shortness of breath, and depression. Recurrent pericarditis happens when symptoms come back after being symptom-free for 4 to 6 weeks, following the initial pericarditis episode.
