According to recent reports from African health officials, a highly dangerous strain of mpox, which was previously confined to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has now spread rapidly to other African countries.

This has raised concerns due to the lack of effective treatments or vaccines available on the continent. As of this year, there have been approximately 14,250 documented cases, nearing the total number for the entire previous year, with over 96% of the cases and fatalities being reported in the DRC.

The new variant of mpox was identified in a mining town in Congo earlier this year. It's alarming that nearly 70% of the cases involve children under 15, who also account for 85% of the deaths. The virus has also reached urban regions, including Goma, a city of over 2 million, in North Kivu province, which borders Rwanda. Particularly high infection rates have been observed among commercial sex workers and their male clients.

Unlike previous outbreaks, where lesions primarily appeared on the chest, hands, and feet, this new variant shows milder symptoms with lesions mainly located on the genitals, making detection more challenging. Doctors Without Borders has described the escalating mpox outbreak as "worrying," especially noting its presence in camps for displaced individuals in the North Kivu region. Dr. Louis Massing, the medical director for Congo, highlighted the significant population movements in and out of the area, emphasizing the risk of a major outbreak.

While mpox outbreaks in Western countries have been controlled through vaccines and treatments, these resources are scarce in African nations, including Congo. Dr. Massing urgently called for vaccines to arrive in the country as quickly as possible. The World Health Organization (WHO) is seeking additional support, expressing deep concerns that this situation could signal the start of a new mpox epidemic.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stressed the need for intensifying public health measures, such as surveillance, community engagement, treatment, and targeted vaccine deployment for those at higher risk of infection. However, additional funding for a comprehensive response, including diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines, is critically needed to counter this escalating crisis.
