Cataract, which causes clouding of the lens, is the leading cause of vision loss in the United States. According to the CDC, an estimated 20.5 million (17.2%) Americans aged 40 years and older have cataracts in one or both eyes, and 6.1 million (5.1%) have had their lens removed by surgery. Roughly 32 million cataract surgeries were conducted worldwide in 2024. As per the NIH, 38.7 million people will have cataracts by 2030.
