Hong Kong Trade Gap Widens In April

Hong Kong's trade deficit increased in April from a year ago as imports grew faster than exports, data from the Census and Statistics Department showed on Monday.

The trade shortfall rose to HK$16.0 billion in April from HK$10.2 billion in the same month last year. In March, the trade balance showed a deficit of HK$45.4 billion.

The visible trade deficit of HK$45.3 billion was equivalent to 3.6 percent of the value of imports.

The Federal Reserve policy session was in focus as it was the first to be led by the new chief Kevin Warsh. In Europe, central banks of the U.K. and Switzerland announced their rate decisions. In Asia, the Bank of Japan drew attention for its policy moves, while data out of China threw some light on the state of the economy.
