Dravet syndrome is a severe and progressive genetic epilepsy, mostly caused due to a mutation of the SCN1A gene that is not inherited. This condition is characterized by frequent, prolonged, and refractory seizures that usually begin within the first year of life. An estimated 38,000 individuals are affected by Dravet syndrome across the seven major markets.
There are a number of approved drugs, including Biocodex's Diacomit, GW Pharmaceuticals/Jazz Pharmaceuticals' Epidiolex, and UCB subsidiary Zogenix's Fintepla. These therapies are primarily focused on reducing seizure frequency, leaving a significant unmet need in the treatment of the syndrome.
