Eurozone Inflation Steady At 2% ECB Target

Euro area consumer price inflation was unchanged at the European Central Bank's 2 percent target in July, easing the pressure for more easing.

The harmonized index of consumer prices increased 2.0 percent year-on-year in July, the same rate of increase as seen in June. Inflation was forecast to ease marginally to 1.9 percent.

Core inflation that excludes prices of energy, food, alcohol and tobacco also remained stable in July, at 2.3 percent.

The European Central Bank became the first major central bank to move in response to the rising inflationary pressures in the backdrop of the conflict in the Middle East. In North America, the U.S. inflation and trade data as well as Canada’s central bank decision gained attention. The Chinese trade data was the main news in Asia.
