Traton SE (8TRA.DE,8TRA.ST), a German commercial vehicle manufacturer, Friday said that its unit sales declined 16 percent in the third quarter, impacted by a significant drop in International Motors sales. During the first nine months of the year, unit sales dropped 9 percent.

The company said that on the basis of preliminary figures, around 71,400 vehicles were sold in the third quarter of this year, a decline from the 85,300 vehicles sold in the year-ago quarter. In the nine-month period, unit sales came in 224,500 vehicles, compared to 245,400 vehicles sold in the same period of fiscal 2024.

Looking at the segments, Traton said that Scania Vehicles & Services saw a 1 percent drop in unit sales in the given period, as strong European orders were offset by weaker demand in Brazil, where high dealer inventories, rising interest rates, and inflation were affecting the heavy-duty truck segment. Overall sales for the first nine months in this division declined by 8 percent.

In the MAN Truck & Bus segment, third-quarter unit sales rose 24 percent. The company said that in spite of the weakness in the European truck market, the demand for MAN trucks, buses, and TGE vans rose, leading to a 4 percent jump in the nine-months total sales.

According to Traton, the International Motors segment saw a 57 percent decline in unit sales in the three-month period, compared to the strong prior-year quarter, helped by a cleared delivery backlog after a factory fire at a supplier. During the nine-month period, unit sales fell 28 percent, impacted by market uncertainties.

The company said that the Volkswagen Truck & Bus or VWTB division posted a 4 percent decrease in third-quarter unit sales as the Brazilian slowdown grew, partly offset by growth in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Peru. Total sales for the first nine months were up 3 percent, helped by an improved first quarter.

Traton SE said that it will release its interim statement for the nine-month period on October 29.

On the XETRA Exchange, 8TRA.DE is up 0.60 percent on Friday's trading at 26.86 euros.
