Shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (SMSHF) announced that it has received Approval in Principle (AIP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for its FSMR (Floating SMR) concept, designed to carry two SMART 100 small modular reactors (SMRs).
The FSMR is a floating offshore nuclear power platform capable of accommodating various SMR types. The SMART 100, developed by the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI), received Standard Design Approval from Korea's Nuclear Safety and Security Commission in September 2024.
The FSMR features a compartment design that groups reactor and power-generation systems by function, allowing different SMR types to be installed by modifying only the reactor compartment. Safety is enhanced through modularization of the reactor and safety systems within a single containment vessel, enabling onshore installation and testing prior to offshore deployment and shortening construction schedules.
"This Approval in Principle marks an important milestone in opening up the offshore nuclear power market," said Young-kyu Ahn, Head of SHI's Offshore Business Division. "Leveraging our advanced floating technologies, Samsung Heavy Industries will continue to provide safe and economically viable offshore nuclear power solutions."
