Vuzix Corporation (VUZI), a supplier of AI-powered smart glasses and waveguides, and Himax Technologies, Inc. (HIMX), a fabless semiconductor manufacturer, on Wednesday announced a new Optical Component Reference Design for augmented reality (AR) glasses.
The design combines Himax's ultra-compact HX7319FL microdisplay with Vuzix's waveguide technology to create lightweight AR glasses that can also support prescription lenses.
On display at the 2026 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, the reference design supports different configurations, including a 30° field of view and brightness above 1000 nits. Himax's microdisplay has a 720 × 720 resolution, while Vuzix's waveguide works with prescription lenses and can be manufactured in both glass and plastic.
"By combining our prescription-ready waveguide technology with Himax Display's ultra-compact LCoS engine, we are enabling OEMs and eyewear partners to bring truly wearable AR glasses to market," said Paul Travers, President and CEO of Vuzix.
On Tuesday, Vuzix shares fell 1.68% to $3.51, while Himax shares rose 1.9% to $8.59.
