HMM Installs Wing Sail On MR Tanker To Advance Low-Carbon Shipping

HMM announced that it has installed a Wing Sail, a type of Wind Assisted Propulsion System (WAPS), on the 50,000-dwt MR tanker Oriental Aquamarine.

The Wing Sail harnesses wind power to generate additional thrust through aerodynamic lift, much like the wing of an aircraft. This innovation supports low-carbon vessel operations and is particularly well-suited to ships that do not carry deck cargo, such as bulk carriers and tankers.

Depending on operating conditions, the installation is expected to achieve fuel savings in the range of 5% to 20%. Reduced fuel consumption not only lowers carbon emissions but also helps vessels comply with key environmental regulations, including the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), Greenhouse Gas Fuel Intensity (GFI), and FuelEU Maritime requirements.

Over the next two years, HMM will closely monitor the performance of the Wing Sail using actual operational data. Based on the results, the company plans to expand the installation of this technology across its entire bulk fleet.
