The Michael Jackson biopic Michael has become the highest-grossing music biopic of all time, dethroning the Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.
As of Sunday (June 14), Michael has grossed $932.2 million, moving past Bohemian Rhapsody's $911 million.
Michael has to notch up about $43 million more to become the top-grossing biopic of all time. Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan's 2023 biopic of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, tops the list, having grossed over $975.8 million worldwide.
According to Box Office Mojo figures, international ticket sales account for 61.1% of Michael's worldwide box office total to date (excluding Canada and the U.S.). International ticket sales accounted for 76.2% of Bohemian Rhapsody's worldwide box office total.
Michael, written by John Logan and directed by Antoine Fuqua, stars Jaafa Jackson, the son of the King of Pop's brother Jermaine, in the titular role. The film depicts the life of Michael Jackson, from his early involvement with the Jackson 5 in the 1960s up until the "Bad World Tour" in the late 1980s.
