Egypt's long-awaited dream of a World Cup victory finally became a reality on Sunday, as Mohamed Salah led the team to a 3-1 victory against New Zealand - 92 years after their first appearance in this tournament.

The Egypt captain not only scored the winning goal against New Zealand, but became the first Egyptian to score in two editions of the global showpiece.

New Zealand started aggressively at BC Place Vancouver, and Finn Surman gave them lead with a bullet header in the 15th minute.

Mostafa Zico then pulled the side back into the game with a free header in the 58th minute.

Nine minutes later Salah struck the decisive blow, brightening Egypt's chances of qualifying to the next stage from Group G.

Iran and Belgium tied without scoring a goal earlier in the day, leaving both teams winless and under pressure ahead of their final Group G fixtures.

The Red Devils had to settle for a share of the points with Iran in an encounter marked by some excellent goalkeeping at both ends in Los Angeles.

Belgium dominated in possession but ended up with ten men after the dismissal of center-back Nathan Ngoy.

18-year-old wonder-kid Lamine Yamal opened Spain's scoring in this World Cup, and to sweep aside Saudis 4-0 at Atlanta Stadium.

Spain dominated from start to finish, erasing the memory of their disappointing display in the opener. Mikel Oyarzabal added a brace before a Hassan Al Tambakti own goal completed the scoring.

While Spain moved closer to the knockout phase, Saudi Arabia now need a win against Cape Verde to keep their campaign alive in Group H.

Cape Verde stole the show in Miami, storming back to stun Uruguay to a 2-2 draw.

Cabo Verde again emerged as the headline-makers on Match day 11 after taking points from yet another World Cup giant.

Having shut out Spain in their opener, the Blue Sharks showed their attacking teeth against Uruguay, opening the scoring with a stunning Kevin Pina free-kick before battling back to snatch an unlikely draw in a breathless second half.

This is the second time in this world Cup that the tiny island nation is denying victory to former champions.

Japan brightened their chances of entering the second round from Group F with a thumping 4-0 victory in a one-sided encounter against Tunisia at the Monterrey Stadium. The African team's second consecutive loss means their exit from the tournament.

Monday's match schedule:

Group J (Dallas)

France - Iraq (17:00)
Group I (Philadelphia)

Norway - Senegal (20:00)
