On Wednesday, Sichuan Kelun-Biotech Biopharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (6990.HK) and Harbour BioMed (2142.HK) announced that they have received approval from China's National Medical Products Administration or NMPA for the Investigational New Drug (IND) application for HBM7575/SKB575 for the treatment of Asthma.

HBM7575/SKB575 is a long-acting antibody targeting thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) and an undisclosed target co-developed by both companies.

On the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, the shares for Kelun Biotech closed Wednesday's trading 7.69 percent higher at HK$536.500, and Harbour BioMed shares closed 4.43 percent higher at HK$12.250.

Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition that affects approximately 300 million people worldwide. As the current therapies for its treatment are insufficient, there is an urgent need for effective, long-acting treatments that address the underlying disease mechanisms.

HBM7575/SKB575 is a long-acting bispecific antibody targeting TSLP and an unrevealed antigen, with a dual mechanism of action. It inhibits TSLP-mediated signaling pathways and the activation of Th2 immune cells by blocking the interaction between TSLP and its receptor. At the same time, binding to and blocking the undisclosed target generates a synergistic effect, potentially controlling inflammation broadly in comparison to single-target approaches.

The companies noted that HBM7575/SKB575 has been engineered to allow for longer dosing intervals and a convenient subcutaneous route of administration.

As per the collaboration deal between both companies, the drug's design, global development and commercialization is led by Kelun-Biotech, while Harbour BioMed participates in the investment and development of the asset and sharing the benefits as agreed.
