Colombia's army said Sunday that its troops have rescued former Congressman Oscar Tulio Lizcano from the left-wing Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebels, who had abducted him eight years ago.

The army said that Lizcano was rescued in a military operation in the mountains of the region of the Choco province on Sunday, but did not provide further details on the operation.

Lizcano, who was a Conservative Party lawmaker, was abducted in Caldas province on 5th August 2000, and is the second high-profile politician to be rescued from the Farc rebels this year.

In July, the Colombian security forces had rescued Ingrid Betancourt, a French-Colombian politician who was abducted during her 2002 presidential campaign, from the custody of the FARC rebels.
