The song was the band's second chart-topper. "You Give Love a Bad Name" had hit number one the previous year. Bon Jovi would go on to score two other number one singles: "Bad Medicine" in 1988 and "I'll Be There For You" in 1989."Livin' On A Prayer" reached the top spot by knocking off Madonna's "Open Your Heart." It held on for four weeks before being replaced by "Jacob's Ladder" by Huey Lewis and the News.
