The first single released under the David Bowie name was released on April 1, 1966.The tune, "Good Morning Girl," was written by Bowie and produced by Tony Hatch. It failed to make a commercial impact. The singer, who would go on to become one of the most popular acts of the 1970s, had put out a previous single, "Can't Help Thinking About Me," under the name David Bowie & The Lower Third. There had also been a string of singles put out under various forms of the singer's real name of David Jones. The first, "Liza Jane," was released in 1964, when Bowie was just 17 years old, under the name Davie Jones and the King Bees.Bowie would begin to gain some traction the following year, helped by the single "The Laughing Gnome" and by his self-titled debut album. He would climb to stardom in the late 60s and early 70s with LPs like "Space Oddity" and "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars."
