Ronnie Lane, the guitarist behind the Small Faces and the Faces, was born at the Plaistow Maternity Hospital, Plaistow, East London on April 1, 1946. He was born to Elsie Lane and Stanley Lane and his father worked as a truck driver. Lane, his mother and his brother all suffered from multiple sclerosis at different points in their life and their father would often work long days and then return home and care for them. Lane completed school at the age of 16 and, after a stint with a group called the Outcasts, formed the Small Faces in 1965. The group, all of whom stood under 5’6”, chose their name after meeting newly recruited keyboardist Jimmy Langwith’s girlfriend. She pointed out their small stature and they combined that with a common phrase of the time, being “the face,” which was comparable to being call “the man” in today’s slang.
