1966 - Janet Jackson Born
1966 - Janet Jackson Born

Janet Jackson was born Janet Damita Jo Jackson in Gary, Indiana on May 16, 1966. Janet was the youngest child of ten born to Katherine and Joe Jackson, and by the time she was a toddler, her older brothers were well into their career as the Jackson Five.

Though Janet initially had no interest in music as a child, Joe pushed her to join her brothers in entertainment. She made her stage debut at the MGM Casino in Las Vegas at the age of seven in 1973. She rose to fame as a teen appearing on the sitcom “Good Times.” It was a troubling time for Janet, as she grew up in front of the entire country:

"When I was doing Good Times they wanted me to bind my chest, I started developing at a young age," she said. "They didn't tell me that they were going to do this. They just did it as I was getting dressed for the first show."

By the age of 16, she had landed her own record deal with A&M Records and her debut album peaked at number six on the Billboard 200 chart.
