Peter Cetera was attacked and severely beaten at a Los Angeles Dodgers baseball game on May 20, 1960. The attack left Cetera with his jaw wired shut, and the former Chicago singer would later reveal that singing with the injury helped him develop his signature vocal sound. Cetera reportedly attracted attention at the game because of his long hair. He was jumped by four Marines who beat him mercilessly, shattering his jaw and leaving him in intensive care at an area hospital for two days.Cetera had released a new album with the Chicago Transit Authority, the predecessor to Chicago just a month before the attack. The band changed its name the following year and released their breakout self-titled album “Chicago” in 1970.
