Aaliyah hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart with “Try Again” on June 17, 2000. The song was originally penned by Timbaland, who is featured on the track, along with Static Major for the film “Romeo Must Die.” It was released as part of the movie’s soundtrack.

In addition to her musical contribution, Aaliyah also co-starred in the film. It was her first foray into acting and, while speaking with Billboard, she said it was exactly the project she was looking for.

“I had been wanting for a while to make the transition from music to film and I really fell in love with it. Once I got the part we started talking about the soundtrack and the direction it would take,” she explained.

“Try Again” grabbed the top spot from Carlos Santana’s hit "Maria Maria,” featuring The Product G&B. It held on for one week in the top spot before it was overtaken by Enrique Iglesias’ "Be with You.”
