1909 - Colonel Tom Parker Born

Elvis Presley’s famed manager Colonel Tom Parker was born in Breda, Netherlands on June 26, 1909. Parker was born Andreas Cornelis van Kuijk and spent most of his youth in Holland working at fairs and carnivals and learned the art of promotion at an early age.

Parker immigrated to the United States illegally at the age of 20 and joined the Army, taking the name of the doctor who administered his physical to avoid immigration troubles. Parker became involved in artist management in the late 1930s. Some of his early clients included Eddie Arnold and Hank Snow.

After hearing Presley perform in 1955, Parker became involved with the rising young singer's career. At the time, Presley was signed to Sam Phillips' famed Sun Records and Parker, along with his co-manager at the time, helped negotiate Presley's move to RCA.
