Coldplay Reach Number One With 'Viva La Vida' Four Years Ago

1980 - Paul McCartney Hits #1 With ‘Coming Up’
1980 - Paul McCartney Hits #1 With ‘Coming Up’

Paul McCartney grabbed the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with his solo single “Coming Up” on June 28, 1980. The track was originally released as part of Paul’s “McCartney II” and the song featured his wife Linda McCartney on backing vocals.

When “Coming Up” grabbed the top spot on the Hot 100 chart, it took over Lipps Inc’s signature track “Funkytown.” The former Beatle held on for three weeks before he was succeeded by Billy Joel and "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me.”

Paul also shot a video for the track in which he dressed up as ten different legendary songwriters including Buddy Holly and Frank Zappa. Paul also embraced his past and threw on the old mop top outfit.

“I almost chickened out at the end . . . but once I did it and put on the old uniform . . . I didn’t realize until a couple days after, that I’d actually gone and broken the whole voodoo of talking about the Beatles. It was really like I’d gone back 20 years,” he told Musician magazine.
