1969 - Henry Mancini Hits #1 With 'Love Theme From Romeo And Juliet'

Composer Henry Mancini hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with his instrumental composition “Love Theme From Romeo And Juliet” on June 28, 1969. The music was arranged from the score to Franco Zeffirelli's film of “Romeo and Juliet,” starring Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey.

When the track hit number one, it claimed the top spot from "Get Back" by the Beatles. Mancini held on for two weeks in the top spot before "In the Year 2525 (Exordium and Terminus)" by Zager and Evans hit number one.

“I like the picture very much and in the background was this lovely piece of music. I left the movie very impressed and started asking why hasn’t this ever been recorded?” Mancini told Billboard of his choice to record the piece.
