The Beatles made international headlines when they unintentionally snubbed the president and first lady of the Philippines on July 4, 1966. The Fab Four had been in the country on tour and were invited to a breakfast hosted by Philippino first lady Imelda Marcos. Marcos had organized the event and invited 300 local children to appear for a publicity shoot. The event was to take place at Malacañang Palace at 11 a.m., and representatives for Marcos appeared at the Beatles’ hotel to inform them of the event just one hour before it was scheduled to begin.Having been given no previous word of the event, manager Brian Epstein replied that the band would not be attending the breakfast, as they were still in bed. The following day, news headlines broke, claiming the band had blown off the invitation. Also, the Philippine government called off the band’s police escort, forcing the Beatles to make their way to the Manila airport through angry mobs. During the trip, tour manager Mal Evans was beaten and kicked. They eventually left the country after paying £6,800 in taxes.
