The Beatles hit the stage for their historic outdoor concert at Shea Stadium in Queens, New York on August 15, 1965. The show was part of the Fab Four’s U.S. summer tour of 1965, which also included two shows at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, California.

The group was at the height of their popularity and performed to a record setting crowd of 55,600 fans at the show. The crowd was a new world record at the time and generated $304,000 at the box office, $160,000 of which went to the band.

They had flown to the show from their New York City hotel in a helicopter, which they originally hoped to land on the field. That plan was stopped by city authorities and they instead landed on the roof of the nearby World’s Fair building and rode to the show in an armored car.

The band was introduced by none other than Ed Sullivan, who shouted over the deafening fan noise, “Now, ladies and gentlemen, honored by their country, decorated by their Queen, loved here in America, here are the Beatles!”
