John Phillips, the mastermind behind 1960s band the Mamas and the Papas, was born on August 30 1935.Phillips grew up in Virginia and, after a few aborted attempts at college, moved to New York in the early 1960s to start a music career. He joined a folk group and eventually met the teenage Michelle Gilliam, who would become his second wife and a member of the Mamas and the Papas.Eventually, they would hook up with Denny Doherty and Cass Elliot to form the vocal quartet. They would release such hits as "California Dreamin'" and "Monday, Monday," but tensions within the band (including Michelle's affair with Doherty) led to the group's dissolution after only a few years.Following the band's breakup, Phillips released a solo album in 1970 and struggled with substance abuse. The addiction would soon come to dominate his life. In the 1980s, he was convicted of drug trafficking and his daughter Mackenzie, who starred on the TV show "One Day At A Time," would later accuse him of having an incestuous affair with her, though other family members (including ex-wife Michelle) claim the charges are not true.Phillips died in 2001.
