1965 - Beatles' 'Yesterday' Released As Single

The Beatles released Paul McCartney’s “Yesterday” as a single on September 13, 1965.

The song, the first recorded by the group to feature only a single member of the band, appeared on the quartet’s 1965 “Help!” album. The song features McCartney on guitar and vocals, backed by a string section that was orchestrated by producer George Martin.

According to Beatles lore, McCartney composed the song's melody in a dream one night and then played it at the piano soon after he woke up to avoid forgetting it. He improvised lyrics to keep the melody in his mind, with the original opening words of the tune being "Scrambled eggs."

McCartney sat on the song for a few weeks, concerned that he had somehow plagiarized it. Eventually, it would go on to be the most covered song in rock history, with versions recorded by such diverse artists as Frank Sinatra and En Vogue.
