The Supremes released “Baby Love” on September 17, 1964. The track was released off their album “Where Did Our Love Go” along with the album’s title track as a B-side.

The track hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart on October 31, 1964, claiming the top spot from "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" by Manfred Mann. The trio held on at number one for a month with the track, eventually falling to "Leader of the Pack" by The Shangri-Las.

The track was penned by the legendary Motown songwriting team of Lamont Dozier and brothers Brian Holland and Edward Holland, Jr. Dozier recalled the track with NME in 1984, saying:

"I would collaborate with Eddie on lyrics and with Brian on melodies. Then Brian and I would go into the studio and produce the actual record although Eddie should have been put down as one of the producers because he helped teach the artists the tune when the lyric was finished."
