Early rock hit maker Del Shannon killed himself at the age of 55 in Santa Clarita, California on February 8, 1990. Shannon had been suffering from depression and shot himself with a .22 caliber rifle while on a heavy dosage of Prozac.Shannon had previously suffered from an alcohol addiction and, though he had recovered, began abusing Prozac shortly after it was prescribed to him in 1990. According to the “Encyclopedia of Dead Rock Stars” by Jeremy Simmonds, Shannon started dieting drastically during this period and withdrew to his home, blowing off any musical commitments. He was found in his bathroom at the newly purchased home and was cremated ten days later. His wife later sued Prozac maker Eli Lilly, claiming Shannon had been healthy and happy before taking the drug.
