Mariah Carey hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with “Someday” on March 9, 1991. The track was released the previous December and spent eight weeks on the chart before moving into the top spot.

The song was featured on the singer’s self-titled debut album, which also spawned three other number one hits: "Vision of Love," "Love Takes Time" and "I Don't Wanna Cry." Carey, who was in her early 20s when the song topped the charts, co-wrote the tune with producer Ben Margulies.

“Someday” replaced Whitney Houston’s hit single “All the Man That I Need,” and remained at number one for two weeks. It eventually handed the top spot over to Timmy T’s “One More Try,” but stayed in the top 20 through the end of 1991.

Carey helped produce the video for “Someday,” which was filmed in a high school in Bayonne, New Jersey. The video featured Mariah interacting with a cast of middle school students as well as Larry Wright, a street drummer Mariah first saw in a special on PBS.
