1978 - Gerry Rafferty Hits #1 With 'City To City'

Gerry Rafferty hit the top of the Billboard 200 chart with “City to City” on July 8, 1978. The album was Rafferty’s first solo album since 1971’s “Can I Have My Money Back,” as he had been working consistently with his band Stealers Wheel.

When the album hit number one, it claimed the top spot from the “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack. Rafferty held on through July 14, 1978 when “Some Girls” by the Rolling Stones hit number one.

The album’s biggest hit was “Baker Street,” which hit number 2 in the U.S. Speaking with the U.K.’s Daily Telegraph, Rafferty says the track was inspired by the period of turmoil he and Stealers Wheel endured in the early and mid-1970s:

"Everybody was suing each other, so I spent a lot of time on the overnight train from Glasgow to London for meetings with lawyers. I knew a guy who lived in a little flat off Baker Street. We'd sit and chat or play guitar there through the night,” he explained.
