Jimi Hendrix was found dead at the Samarkand Hotel, located at 22 Lansdowne Street in the Notting Hill section of London on September 18, 1970. After a full night of partying, Hendrix consumed a lethal dosage of the sleeping pill Vesparax and was later found to have asphyxiated on his own vomit. On the night before his death, Hendrix was seen with his then-girlfriend, German figure skater Monica Dannemann. The pair had reportedly been arguing and after leaving him at a party in Notting Hill, Dannemann returned to pick Hendrix up at around 3:00 am. She later gave several varying accounts of the rock icon’s death and committed suicide in 2006 after her testimony about that night was proven false. Two years before his death, Hendrix made a prophetic statement acknowledging the martyrdom of dead pop artists:“It’s funny how most people love death. Once you’re dead, you’re made for life — you have to die before they think you’re worth anything,” he said in 1968, according to “The Encyclopedia of Dead Rock Stars” by Jeremy Simmonds.
