James Brown recorded his classic single “Try Me!” at Belltone Studios in New York City on September 18, 1958. The track was released as part of Brown’s album “Please Please Please” and featured the B-side “Tell Me What I Did Wrong.”The track topped the Billboard R&B songs chart by February of 1959, bumping "Lonely Teardrops" by Jackie Wilson from the top spot. Brown and the Famous Flames held on at number one with the track until "Stagger Lee" by Lloyd Price hit number one.In his autobiography from 1986, Brown recalled the tune, saying it was "really a pop tune. I had heard ‘Raindrops’ by Dee Clark and ‘For Your Precious Love’ by Jerry Butler and the Impressions, so I wrote my song to fit between them,” he explained.
