Novo Nordisk A/S' (NVO) once-weekly Semaglutide to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes awaits FDA decision on December 5, 2017.Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, belonging to the same class of drugs as that of Lilly's approved drug Trulicity. This class of drugs stimulates insulin and suppresses glucagon, the two hormones that work together to regulate blood sugar.In a head-to-head study comparing Semaglutide and Trulicity, people with type 2 diabetes treated with once-weekly Semaglutide experienced superior reduction in HbA1c and body weight compared to treatment with once-weekly Trulicity.An FDA panel voted 16-0, supporting the approval of Semaglutide in October of this year. The FDA usually follows the recommendations of its advisory panels, although it is not required to do so.NVO closed Tuesday’s (Nov.28) trading at $51.92, up 0.82%.
