Paul McCartney and Wings hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart with their hit single “Band on the Run” on June 8, 1974. The track was originally released as part of McCartney’s album of the same name and went on to sell one million copies in the U.S. later that year.

When “Band on the Run” hit the top of the Hot 100 it took over for "The Streak" by Ray Stevens. The track held on in the number one spot for one week before it was succeeded by "Billy Don't Be a Hero" by Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods.

The track is credited to McCartney and his band mate and wife Linda McCartney. The former Beatle also produced the track and, according to engineer Alan O’Duffy, Paul had a very clear vision for the song.

“He was absolutely demanding and wanted something very specific and wonderful,” O’Duffy recalls in Peter Ames Carlin’s “Paul McCartney: A Life.” “He still gave guys the freedom to play their instruments the way they wanted to play them. He just edited them psychologically and musically until he got what he wanted.”
