1955 - Elvis Costello Born

New wave pioneer Elvis Costello was born on August 25, 1955, in London.

The prolific songwriter has been a constant fixture since he burst onto the punk and new wave scene in the mid 1970s. Over his career, he has released more than 30 studio albums.

Costello released his first album, “My Aim Is True,” in 1977. The album, produced by Nick Lowe, featured the Costello classics “Alison” and “Less Than Zero.” The American issue of the disc also featured the track “Watching the Detectives.”

In 1977, Costello gained a level of infamy when he halted his band in mid-performance of “Less Than Zero” on “Saturday Night Live," so that he could lead the band through a performance of a different song, “Radio Radio.” Costello wouldn’t perform on “SNL” again until 1989.
