Chicago Reach Number One With 'If You Leave Me Now' 35 Years Ago

1999 - Santana's 'Smooth' Hits #1
1999 - Santana's 'Smooth' Hits #1

"Smooth," with Carlos Santana on guitar and Matchbox Twenty singer Rob Thomas on vocals, hit number one on October 23, 1999.

The song appeared on Santana's collaboration LP "Supernatural." Besides Thomas, the album contained tracks by the likes of Lauryn Hill, Dave Matthews and Everlast.

“Smooth” took over the top spot after a two-week run by the Mariah Carey/Jay-Z collaboration "Heartbreaker." "Smooth" would remain number one for 12 consecutive weeks. It finally gave up its reign in mid-January to Christina Aguilera's "What A Girl Wants."

Santana would hit number one again in 2000 with "Maria Maria," another track from the "Supernatural" LP.
