Rapper Deshaun Holton, better known as Proof from the Detroit crew D12, a group closely associated with rap giant Eminem, died of a gunshot wound at St. John Health's Conner Creek Campus in Detroit on April 11, 2006.

The shooting occurred after Proof and another man got in an argument over a game of pool at a local nightclub.

Proof also shot and killed a man named Keith Bender Jr. during the incident. The rapper was shot by the club’s bouncer, Mario Etheridge, who was also Bender’s cousin. The rapper was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

He had risen to prominence on the Detroit hip-hop scene after hosting various battles and rap performances. While speaking with Billboard, Eminem says Proof was a major influence early on.

“Without Proof there would be no Eminem, no Slim Shady, no D12,” Em explained in 2006.
