Legendary Motown singer Martha Reeves came up short in her bid for re-election to the Detroit City Council this week. She was the lone incumbent not to be advanced to the general election in November.

Detroit's city council has been plagued by scandal, and Reeves did little to endear herself to voters over her one term, telling the BBC that her council post was a "second job."

She took her defeat in stride, telling reporters she will focus on her singing career.

"It's cool," insisted Reeves. "I'm happy people came out and voted."

Martha and the Vandellas were among the most successful groups of the Motown roster during the rich 1963-1967 period. In 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked Martha and the Vandellas #96 on their list of the 100 greatest artists of all time.
