Principal Financial Group Inc. (PFG) announced third-quarter net income available to common stockholders of $184.7 million, or $0.57 per share, compared to $90.1 million, or $0.35 per share in the year ago quarter.
Operating earnings for the quarter were $238.7 million, compared to $251.2 million for third quarter 2008. Operating earnings per share for third quarter 2009 were $0.74 compared to $0.96 for the same period in 2008. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected the company to report earnings of $0.65 per share for the quarter. Analysts' estimates typically exclude special items.
Total revenues for the quarter were $2.27 billion, down from $2.50 billion in the year ago quarter. Seven analysts had consensus revenue estimate of $2.49 billion for the quarter.
