French Business Sentiment Falls In April

Confidence among France's businesses fell markedly in April after an improvement in March, a survey by the statistical office Insee showed Monday.

The headline synthetic index fell to 95 in April from a revised reading of 98 in March. Economists expected the score to remain unchanged from March's initial reading of 96. Business leaders considered that their past activity slightly increased in the manufacturing industry.

Total order books decreased slightly while export order books deteriorated markedly. The personal production expectations fell to -4 in April from 8 in the previous month. The survey report said that the personal production outlook suggests activity in manufacturing industry would be not dynamic in the next months.

The indicator for general production expectations, which represents business leaders' opinion on French industry as a whole, was almost steady at -14 compared to -15 in the preceding month.
